Research on the Priests Credibly Accused of Sexual Abuse
In, Crisis and Challenge in the Roman Catholic Church Perspectives on Decline and Reformation. Edited by Debra Meyers and Mary Sue Barnett. Published by Lexington Books, 2020
Everyone has a story, but not every publicly named credibly accused priest has his own home, 12 Charolais cattle and two quarter horses. Rev. Robert Barzyk, a Texas transplant from New York, served 35 years in parishes across Houston before the diocese removed him from ministry. Since the Archdiocese does not provide any dates or contextual information, this research aims to identify where and when he most likely offended during his active years. Perhaps it will aid survivors in identifying their abuser.
Of the 15 Texas Dioceses reporting the names of clergy credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor, 12 had priests who offended in multiple dioceses; credibly accused in one diocese and transferred to another. This report looks at those priests and the data reported and withheld from the diocesan lists.
